"Restoration of Pierce's First Gasoline Powered Fire Truck"
The headlines in the April 25, 1925, Pierce County Leader read "Pierce's Beautiful New Fire Truck". It was a picture of a 1925 Dodge Fire Truck--the fire department's first gasoline powered fire truck. It was purchased for $4800. In conjunction with the Pierce Q125 celebration, the fire department undertook the project of restoring this damaged fire truck down to the last nut and bolt and to restore it, as close as possible, to the original condition. This was to be a tribute to the past, present, and future firefighters and a method of saving part of Pierce's history. Restoration started in April 1995, powder coating parts, forming replacement parts from sheet metal, and chroming or brass plating fittings, valves, and structural members. Each piece was individually painted and then reassembled. Finally, after over 5,000 volunteered man hours, the final touches of gold leaf striping and a plaque were added. It is now the PRIDE and JOY of the Pierce Fire Department and is taken to surrounding communities as a parade entry.
